One trick I often find useful but that is missing above is quoted here-files.

: hal9000:~; cat <

<END>

$HOSTNAME
> END
timin

Vs.

: hal9000:~; cat <<'END'
> $HOSTNAME
> END

I found out you can suppress leading tabs with "-"

: hal9000:~; cat <<-END
> $HOSTNAME
> END
$HOSTNAME
