Ref#36, to join lines with backslash arbitrarily -
awk '!/\\$/ {ORS="\n"}; /\\$/ {sub(/\\$/,""); ORS=""}; 1'

In above, first condition sets \n as ORS if no backslash, second condition sets ORS as "" and removes backslash from line and final one "; 1" jus prints the line.
