perl -ple 's/^\s*|\s*$//g;' #another way to trim

#to encode as hexidecimal entities and utf8 characters (ie: quarter-note)

perl -MHTML::Entities=encode_entities_numeric -Mutf8 -le 'print encode_entities_numeric("♫")'
