Hm. I dont see the point to the total commander. Seems to me like a mixture of midnight commander and the old Win 3.1 file manager.
But ok, maybe that is like emacs - I often hear people ask me why I still use emacs, being more complicated than more modern IDEs. But well, I am satisfied with the Windows Explorer and the Cygwin Shell.
I use VirtualBox for Virtualization, and for most Linux-Related stuff Cygwin - also for ssh, scp, etc.
And two pieces of software I nearly always install are Avira AntiVir (having a virus scanner can provide additional security, even though it should mostly be useless) and GIMP.
