You can also pull the file with wget, and then encode to ascii using openssl via a base64 conversion. Here is a simple bash function:

b64enc() { echo "$1" | /usr/sfw/bin/openssl enc -base64 -d; }
b643dec() { echo "$1" | /usr/sfw/bin/openssl enc -base64 -a; }
