Here's a nice way to achieve the Cartesian join using only tools already present in your article, but without any general purpose languages such as awk.

join -1 1 -2 1 -o 1.2,2.2 \
<(sort -u setA.txt | sed 's/^/x /') \
<(sort -u setB.txt | sed 's/^/x /')
