The only problem with producing large sets with the methods outlined above is that there may be duplicates in sets. This messed with the complement operations when a duplicate is in set1: sort set2 set2 set1|uniq -u doesn't show any duplicates, comm outputs a de-duped set, while grep leaves the duplicates in set1 unmolested.

I guess the lesson is: make sure your sets are true sets first.
